  I also would like to know if there are buses during the night and how much time it takes to travel this distance.

  the buses from Guangzhou to Shantou depart from Guangdong Provincial Long-distance Bus station (next to the Guangzhou railway station) at 06:30, 07:00, 07:40, 08:30, 10:00, 12:30, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30, 16:30, 19:00, 20:00, 22:00.
  the journey takes 5 hours.
  the buses from Shantou to Guangzhou depart at: 00:40, 08:05, 09:00, 09:10, 10:10, 10:40, 11:00, 11:05, 12:05, 13:45, 16:05, 16:45, 17:00, 17:45, 18:00, and 18:45.
