Why was it important to connect the northern cities and the southern region of the Sui?

Question about Sui Dynasty

It benifits for the culture and economy communications between the northern part and the south part. Furthur, the national strength will be enhanced. The connection of the northern and southern also helped to strengthen central government' rule over the whole country.
