Olympics: Overseas ticket numbers double
Beijing organisers have doubled the number of Olympic tickets allocated to overseas spectators than those on offer at Athens, an official said today.
Roughly 4.5 million tickets had been sold so far among the total 7 million on offer, and only 2.45 million were booked by domestic buyers, the deputy director of Olympic Ticketing Centre Rong Jun told reporters.
"Our principle is to make sure every country secures tickets at least not less than they got at the last Olympics," said Rong, a former director who was removed from the post after the ticketing system collapsed under overwhelming demand last year.
About 2.1 million had gone to the National Olympic Committees of more than 180 countries and regions, as well as sponsors, rights-holding broadcasters, international federations and International Olympic Committee guests, he said.
The third phase of domestic ticket sales begins on May 5, releasing 1.38 million tickets for the August 8-24 Games, and the final allocation overseas will take place before the middle of May.
The rest of the tickets would be available at venues during the Games, Rong said.
The opening and closing ceremony tickets with high-tech chips saving the holder's personal information and a photo would help security, prevent fraud and quicken the check-in process, he said.
The only legal way for overseas spectators to buy the tickets is through local Olympic committees or their designated agents.
