Question about China Visa

  seems like there is conflicting answers, so how do we believe anything?

  i'm US citizen with passport will have 5 hours on way over, and 12 hours on way back, ok i can get a transit visa, and ?not leave the airport; what ? doesn't sound like a visa to me; lets say i want to do a city tour and be picked up at the airport and dropped off. Do you do that? who does?
  
  and then if a transit visa doesn't allow to leave airport, and some answers say I dont' need a "visa"
  what am i gonna get ? a "stamp" for the tour?

• if you will exit the airport during the transit, you do have to apply for a transit visa.
