- It's nearly impossible to tell the difference for certain types of porcelain without years of expertise or a basement full of books and photos. If it is an underglaze blue and white type piece then it is not Song because Yuan dynasty invented the modern blue and white porcelain. But then you will need to worry about everything from Ming to Qing to modern as the copies were flawless. If it is a celedon piece, then the color, design, shape, foot all tell a story. If it is a monochrome then the same attributues apply. I have been studying this stuff going on 2 years now and i still get stumped...a lot. However to start the first thing to look for are signs of age. Is the shine of the glaze almost gone, does it have any long cracks, crazing (short crackled cracks), rust spots, chips, worn places. That is the first step, with items this old, it should show a few of these signs if not all. If it looks new...it probably is.Answered by RM (USA) | Feb. 19, 2013 15:49
