How to calculate 24 hours transit time?
We are Americans flying from Okinawa to Dubai, but transiting it China. We have an overnight layover in Shanghai for 17 hours and 40 minutes. On the Shanghai to Dubai segment, there is a stop (though no plane change) in Kunming. I know that we don't need a visa as long as we are transiting, and our total transit time in China does not exceed 24 hours. How do they count the hours? From the time we land in Shanghai until the time we leave? Or from the time we land in Shanghai until the time we take off from Kunming, even though we don't get off the plane? Thank you.

- the 24 hours count from the time you land in Shanghai to the time you take off from Kunming, and the total transit time should not exceed 24 hours. Answered by Kelly | May. 01, 2013 20:45
- Just in case anyone else has this issue, I just received a reply from the Chinese embassy in Washington. The 24 hours does not include Kunming. Their answer is: "The 24 hours counts at the time when you enter custom, in and out." For me, that will mean entering and departing Shanghai.Answered by MMH (USA) | May. 02, 2013 16:25
- no, no, i guess you misunderstand the answer from the Chinese Embassy. i'm pretty sure the 24 hours count from the time you enter Shanghai to the time you leave Kunming. in another words, you will enter China from Shanghai customs and leave China from Kunming customs.Answered by Kelly | May. 02, 2013 19:48
- I do not get off the airplane in Kunming. It is a stop, but not a change of planes.Answered by MMH | May. 02, 2013 20:47
- oh, i see. i forget that it will be only a stopover in Kunming. Then, you are right. :)Answered by Kelly | May. 03, 2013 19:57
