Question about China Embassy in United Kingdom

Why do I need to return to the UK for a visa?
I came to China on a Z visa and have worked at 4 universities teaching English over a period of 5 years. I gave up my teaching post in Shandong at a well-known university to live with my Chinese wife in Hunan province, moving in July 2013. We have been a couple for over 4 years but due to work circumstances only got maried in January 2013. My university wanted me to stay but they have met my wife and understand the situation, even asking id she could live in Shandong and do business there.
My current residence permit expires on 17 August. On arrival in Hunan I went to the police station and registered for temporary residence. Then on a visit to the Public Security Bureau we were informed that I have to return to the UK and get a new visa as my circumstances have changed. I no longer want to teach but to help my wife, as her husband, with her (registered) business.
Do I need to return to the UK? Is it not possible to do the visa change in Hong Kong anymore after the new regulations of July 1st? Will I apply for a visiting relative visa, tourist visa or business visa?
Advice needed urgently please.

- As far as i know, according to the Chinese entry and exit regulation, you can have your temporary residence permit changed at the department where you got your current permit. Answered by Hebe | Aug. 11, 2013 21:51
