Is there a direct way to go to Mudanjiang from Baishan without going through Harbin?

Yes, there is a bus connecting Kuandian and Mudanjiang that passes Baishan. You may take it, but I am not clear about the schedule. There is another way: take a bus to Wusong County and then transfer to another bus to Mudanjiang, in which way you don't need to detour.
