  is there direct train, buses?
  i prefer train if the journey would not be too long?

  there are trains from Kunming to Dali. the train trip takes about 7 hours, you can buy a sleeper ticket of a night train and get to Dali in the early morning. you'd better book the ticket 3 - 10 days in advance.
