  What happens if I try to bring over $5000 cash?

  I understand that I may bring $5000 into China without making a declaration. However, can anyone explain the process which occurs if I try to bring more than $5000?
  
  I understand I have to make a declaration, but what happens after that? Do they just make a note of it, then let me into the country?
  
  I've read that if you try to bring $10000 or more cash that you need government documentation. Can you explain what that documentation is and how you acquire it?

• Normally, if you have paid taxes in China, which means you're legally employed, you can carry out of China an amount of up to 10,000 USD (or the equivalent in other currencies). Yet the reality is more complex and uncertain... As regards bringing money into the country, I think the same terms apply.
