Chinese transit Visa (G) for French people
I am French.I will be in Asia outside of China for 1 month during this summer. At the end of my trip I will fly to Shanghai, take my staff in the city ( I have lived in Shanghai for 6 months) and leave definively Shanghai the day after to go back to France. Do I need a G Visa? Where can I apply in Shanghai before leaving for my road trip in Asia? Or is it possible to get easily this G Visa at Pudong airport? Thank you

- Hi Soizick,
French citizens are free of visa if you stay in Shanghai less than 48 hours for transit.
if you stay in Shanghai for more than 48 hours, you can apply the G visa through the Chinese Embassy before you go to Shanghai, and it can not be get in Shanghai Pudong airport.Answered by Grace | Mar. 19, 2012 18:56 - Thank you Grace! If I stay in Shanghai less than 48hours, I could leave the airport to go the city and come back at the airport within the 48hours to take my plane to France, without any special paper? Or Should I register somewhere?
If I decide to stay more than 48hours, is it easy to get a G Visa through the Chinese embassy in Bangkok, Bali, or Jakarta for example?Answered by Soizick | Mar. 19, 2012 19:25 - you're welcome Soizick,
you can leave the airport within the 48 hours without any special paper, just your valid passport, and air ticket from Shanghai to France are fine (in this case, you have to enter and exit Shanghai from the Shanghai Hongqiao or Pudong airports).
you can get a G visa through the Chinese Embassy in these areas, but i'm not sure if it easy or not. i guess there will be no big problems if you have valid travel documents and files that can prove you will not overstay in China.Answered by Grace | Mar. 20, 2012 03:03 - My friend happens to be in the same situation than you (she lands in Shanghai and has to exit the airport for a couple of hours to get her luggage, then check in again to fly back to France).
We heard a lot of different stuff about the transit visa, and the 48hours permission with a French passeport.
How did it go for you? Did you actually manage to pass the customs without any visa application?
Some people told us that sometimes the customs make a fuss about it and won't let you exit the airport. That's what we are trying to avoid by all means.
